Participation in the IAFL Introduction to European Family Law Conference

Hamburg, 23rd–24th October 2025

In October 2025, I had the privilege of attending the IAFL Introduction to European Family Law Conference, held at the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg. The event gathered 85 delegates from 22 jurisdictions, creating an inspiring forum for exchange among leading practitioners, academics, and judges in the field of international family law.

Over two intensive days, the conference provided deep insights into the current challenges and developments shaping family law across Europe. The agenda covered a wide spectrum of relevant issues, including:

Between borders and best interest: Child protection within a multi-level legal framework.

Divorce across Europe: Divergent national approaches and the search for coherence within EU and international contexts.

The connection between international family law and immigration law: How migration issues increasingly intersect with family law practice.

Married and unmarried (de facto) couples: Maintenance and other financial consequences when relationships break down.

Becoming a mother through reproductive medicine: Legal perspectives in a transnational context.

The conference once again demonstrated how international family law is continuously evolving in response to social change, international mobility, and the realities of modern families.

I highly value the professional network fostered through this organisation. The IAFL brings together leading family law specialists from around the world who share not only legal expertise but also a commitment to excellence and international collaboration.

For my clients, this network represents a tangible advantage. Through direct contact with trusted colleagues in other jurisdictions, I am able to:

  • swiftly obtain reliable legal insights into foreign family law systems,
  • coordinate cross-border cases efficiently, and
  • ensure that international aspects — whether concerning child relocation, divorce, property division, or maintenance — are handled with precision and care.

Participation in IAFL events such as the Hamburg conference reinforces these connections and ensures that my advice remains both comparatively informed and internationally effective.

For clients whose family situations extend beyond national borders, this international exchange is not an abstract benefit; it is a decisive factor in achieving sound, timely, and legally secure solutions.
